Georgia freshman defender compared to first-round draft pick

247Sports released player comparisons for the top 10 recruits of the 2025 recruiting class. The Georgia Bulldogs signed Elijah Griffin, the No. 3 recruit in the class of 2025, he earned a comparison to Washington Commanders defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw.

Kinlaw was a four-star prospect when he committed to the South Carolina Gamecocks in 2016. With the Gamecocks, he established himself as a do-it-all defensive lineman: a guy who’s adept at stopping the run and adept at rushing the quarterback.

NFL scouts loved Kinlaw after three years of superb play with the Gamecocks, where he earned 93 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks. The San Francisco 49ers with drafted Kinlaw the 14th pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

Georgia fans are surely hoping five-star Elijah Griffin can become that kind of defender. In his tenure with Savannah Christian Prep in Savannah, Georgia, he put up 301 tackles, 44 sacks, and 96 tackles for loss, which are unheard of for a defensive lineman.

Of course, coming from Georgia, Griffin has earned comparisons to NFL All-Pro defensive tackle Jalen Carter, but regardless of how Griffin’s Georgia career turns out, he will be needed to be a key contributor as a freshman. Georgia lost over 75% of its sack production from last season to a combination of the NFL draft and the transfer portal.
