Going into the 2025 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will examine each player listed on the Penn State roster. Over the preseason, each profile will cover the player’s background, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for James Franklin this season.
The return of the King means added depth in Penn State’s safety room; after spending his freshman season as a Nittany Lion and sophomore season at Alabama, King Mack is back in Happy Valley entering his third season of college football.
“It was a no-brainer for us because I think he would have played a significant amount for us last year. I think for King, why take unnecessary risk?” Franklin said. “He knows us. We know him. So it didn’t take very long.”

Depth Chart Overview
Though he likely wouldn’t have started, Mack would’ve seen substantial playing time had he stayed at Penn State last season. His return shows interest from both sides, meaning he’ll likely be a contributor on the two-deep this season. He played on special teams during his lone year at Penn State, so it’s possible he makes an impact in that realm as well.
