Notre Dame football commit Chaston Smith transfers to Knoxville Catholic

One of Tennessee’s top high school football recruits is headed home for his senior season.

Four-star defensive back Chaston Smith is transferring from McCallie to Knoxville Catholic ahead of the upcoming football season, Catholic coach Philip Shadowens confirmed to Knox News on May 30. Prior to his junior year at McCallie, Smith spent two years at Bearden.

Smith is Tennessee’s No. 10 ranked recruit in the 247Sports Composite for the Class of 2026 and committed to Notre Dame last December while holding offers from Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Vanderbilt and more.

“We had a very talented, young group of secondary kids and so he brings some experience to that,” Shadowens said. “Obviously (he’s) a four-star committed to Notre Dame, so obviously a very talented kid.

“The biggest thing that I know about Chas is he’s such a good kid, high quality kid, great character, hard worker. So it’s all those things that you want a kid to do that’s coming in as a senior. So I think he’ll be someone that our kids can also look at and see how to practice every day.”

Smith’s move brings him closer to home, where his mother is an administrator for Knox County Schools and his brother, Penny, serves as cornerbacks coach at Catholic. Last season at McCallie Smith played in just five games due to injury, but recorded five tackles, one interception and two pass breakups.

A revamped coaching core will join Smith under Shadowens next season, including former Bearden coach Josh Jones, who joins as an assistant and quarterbacks coach.

Other additions to Shadowens’ staff ahead of next season include new offensive coordinator Rusty Bradley, who joins from Asheville…
