SANDESTIN — Florida freshman wideout Dallas Wilson put a position group on notice with a record-setting spring game and a distinctive work ethic for a 19-year-old.
If coaches get their wish to eliminate the spring transfer portal window and establish a single 10-day period in January, a veteran stuck behind an rising star would have nowhere to go.
Despite Wilson’s impact, UF’s receiver room remained intact. But at a time when student-athletes’ rights prevail and provide the freedom to change schools and cash in, coaches aim to regain control and curtail roster movement — even at the expense of a player in an unfavorable situation.
At this past week’s SEC Spring Meetings, much of the focus was on College Football Playoff expansion, the impact of the House vs. NCAA settlement and the potential move to a nine-game football schedule.
Georgia coach Kirby Smart said many failed to recognize the elephant in the room at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Resort.
“The biggest decision that has to be made in college football right now by far to me — by far — is when is the portal window and is there one or two,” he said. “That’s not being decided by us today. A lot of people don’t even know how it’s being decided and who is deciding it.”

Many coaches and decision-makers agree that having two transfer windows is problematic.
Texas A&M coach Mike Elko views the current set-up as nonsensical, given college football’s increasing resemblance to the NFL.
“It certainly seems as if [NFL] free agency happens once, not twice,” he said. “And it happens right after the season before you start practicing.”
A push in college seems to exist…
