IU football coach Curt Cignetti: ‘We’ve got a chance to be as good as we want to be’
Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti shares his overall impressions of the team’s performance during spring practice.
BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti was amused by a question about his backup quarterback situation coming out of spring practice while talking to reporters at a recent booster event.
“I’m more concerned about the starter being able to win games, right now,” Cignetti said with a smile. “He’s going to play the most snaps for me, right?”
Last year, Cignetti was reluctant to talk about a pecking order at the position while Kurtis Rourke and Tayven Jackson competed for the starting job. He’s approached things a bit differently this spring after signing former Cal transfer Fernando Mendoza, the No. 4-rated quarterback in this year’s transfer class, and referred to him as the expected starter throughout camp.
Cignetti also had no issues telling reporters that Mendoza’s backup going into fall camp is his younger brother Alberto.
Alberto threw for 96 yards (10 of 13) and a touchdown in IU’s spring game, with much of that production coming on the offense’s final possession. He completed all five of his pass attempts and threw a 7-yard touchdown to LeBron Bond in the final two minutes.
Indiana also signed former Old Dominion starter Grant Wilson in the winter portal window, but he only played five snaps in the spring game.
“All these guys have a body of work, but they either get better or get worse,” Cignetti said. “No one stays the same. When you bring new guys into your system, everybody’s system is a little bit different. They all got development to do.”
