Auburn projected to meet Texas Tech in bowl season by The Athletic

The Athletic has given Auburn a strong postseason outlook ahead of the 2025 season opener with its latest bowl projections.

Scott Dochterman and Stewart Mandel of The Athletic have taken a crack at how the 2025 season will unfold by predicting the College Football Playoff field, as well as the lineup for bowl season. The duo believes that Auburn will miss out on the College Football Playoff, but is confident that they will show signs of improvement this season by forecasting them to play in a quality bowl game against another team that is projected to trend upward this year.

According to The Athletic’s early-season projection, the Tigers will face Texas Tech in the Texas Bowl, scheduled for Dec. 27 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Texas Tech has made headlines this season due to its heavy investment in NIL, which has resulted in the program hauling in two-straight top-30 recruiting classes and a quality transfer portal haul that features five-star wide receiver Micah Hudson, four-star EDGE David Bailey, and former Auburn EDGE Romello Height. The added investment in NIL has led to higher expectations for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech is projected to finish tied for third place in the Big 12 this season, and received four first-place votes in the conference’s preseason poll. The Red Raiders will also begin the season ranked No. 24 in the US LBM Coaches Poll from USA TODAY Sports.

Auburn football is aiming to return to a bowl game for the first time since the 2023 season, when it faced Maryland in the Music City Bowl, losing 31-13. The Tigers are 24-21-2 in bowl games historically, and have lost four straight postseason games dating back to 2020 when Auburn fell to Minnesota, 31-24, in the Outback Bowl. Its last win in bowl season came in the 2018 Music City Bowl against Purdue.
