Penn State is in a fortunate position with its running back situation going into the 2025 season. According to one ranking of running back position groups, Penn State may be in the best running back situation in the nation, and not just the Big Ten.
CBS Sports college football writer Tom Fornelli shared his ranking of running back rooms in the nation for the upcoming 2025 season, and the Nittany Lions lead the pack. With the returns of Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, each coming off 1,000-yard seasons on the ground, this may have been a pretty easy call to make.
Singleton rushed for 1,099 yards and 12 touchdowns in the 2024 season. Singleton also caught five touchdown passes and had a career-best 375 receiving yards. In all, Singleton averaged 6.9 yards per play, and he touched the football 213 times.
Allen rushed for a career-best 1,108 yards and scored eight rushing touchdowns. He also added to the passing game with a couple of touchdown catches and 153 receiving yards. Allen averaged 5.3 yards per play from scrimmage and touched the football 238 times last season.
Singleton and Allen each could have made the decision to enter the NFL draft and few would have batted an eye. Getting just one of these two backs back for another season is a major lift for Penn State. Having both come back is just a cherry on top of the football depth sundae. In the age of the transfer portal and NIL endorsements, it not insignificant that Penn State managed to get both of these players to return for one more season in Happy Valley.
