DCTF details Texas A&M’s QB Marcel Reed’s make or break impact in 2025

It’s always nice to see when members of the national college football media begin to ignore narratives that have dominated the offseason, including Texas starting quarterback Arch Manning’s unearned ascendancy as the best signal caller in the country despite sitting on the bench over the past two seasons.

While Manning is expected to be more than good enough to lead the Longhorns back to the College Football Playoff, Texas A&M’s success during the 2025 season will wholly depend on redshirt junior QB Marcel Reed’s improvement as a pocket passer.

This week, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Senior Writer Mike Craven published a detailed article titled “Texas A&M’s 2025 Outlook Hinges on One Player: Marcel Reed,” discussing the Texas A&M starting QB’s massive importance regarding the progress the program will make after last season’s disappointing 1-4 finish.

In the article, Craven, like those of us who professionally cover Texas A&M, acknowledges that outside of Reed’s need to improve as a passer, the Aggies’ 2025 roster is stacked on both sides of the ball, a fact that has been recognized in various preseason rankings and metrics. Head coach Mike Elko’s awareness of the need to make changes to the roster this offseason included adding 14 players from the transfer portal and hiring former James Madison defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill to the defensive staff.

However, Craven also points out that Reed’s record as the team’s starter last season included underwhelming wins over Florida, Arkansas, Bowling Green, and New Mexico State, which finished a combined 25-26 last season, while his four losses were against teams with a combined 34-20 record in 2024.

Still, Elko has continued to praise Reed throughout the offseason, noting the technical improvement that he has made with the help of private coaches this summer.
