Tigers ‘shape’ offseason with stellar recruiting

The Athletic takes a dive into Hugh Freeze’s recruiting production, and how it could lead to success in 2025.

Hugh Freeze is aiming to take the Auburn Tigers to new heights in year three as head coach, and his offseason recruiting efforts could be a step in the right direction.

Manny Navarro of The Athletic recently shared the moves (or in some cases, the lack thereof) that shaped the offseason for SEC football. Auburn is on the good side of that list due to its offseason recruiting efforts that landed them in the top 10 of both high school and transfer portal rankings. Navarro pointed out Auburn’s in-state efforts have been effective by signing nine of Alabama’s 19 blue-chip players and by landing productive, experienced transfer portal pieces.

Freeze also signed a top-10 transfer class. Twelve of Auburn’s 19 portal additions started at least six games at an FBS program last season, and six rank among the top 200 transfers. The group is headlined by receivers Eric Singleton (Georgia Tech) and Horatio Fields (Wake Forest) and offensive linemen Xavier Chaplin (Virginia Tech) and Mason Murphy (USC). Former five-star prospect Jackson Arnold, who spent two years at Oklahoma, is one of four new quarterbacks on the roster.

Freeze addressed his quarterback needs by bringing in starters Jackson Arnold (Oklahoma) and Ashton Daniels (Stanford), and built a quality supporting cast around them. He brought in Chapman and Murphy to block on the outside of the of the offensive line, and Singleton and Fields to be reliable receivers to pair with Cam Coleman and Malcolm Simmons.
