Whitehaven senior running back Christopher Talley has committed to West Virginia, he told The Commercial Appeal on July 4.
Talley is rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports Composite, which ranks him as the No. 21 player in Tennessee’s 2026 class, and the No. 48 running back in the country. He chooses the Mountaineers over Memphis, Cincinnati and Georgia Tech. He took visits to all four schools prior to his commitment.
“When I went to Morgantown it just felt like home,” Talley said. “And I feel like they can help me achieve all my goals that I want to accomplish on and off the field.”
There will be a Memphis connection at West Virginia, too — former Tigers coach Larry Porter is the running backs coach. Porter was hired this offseason after Rich Rodriguez took over as head coach.
The CA ranked Talley as the No. 1 running back in the Memphis area entering the 2025 high school football season. In 2024, Talley rushed for 1,5423 yards and 18 touchdowns on just 163 carries, helping Whitehaven to a 6-4 record.
Speed is the difference maker for Talley, who set a state record on the track in the 110 hurdles at this spring’s TSSAA Class AAA state championships with a time of 13.83 seconds. His speed and elusiveness in the open field will be key as the Tigers look to make the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
Talley is the second Whitehaven senior to choose a college home, joining Michigan State defensive end commit Cory House Jr. The Tigers begin their 2025 season at Ensworth on Aug. 22 in Nashville.
