The world of college football has changed dramatically over the last five seasons, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the heated rivalry between the Oregon Ducks and the Washington Huskies.
Getting a victory over the Huskies, and vice versa, is perhaps the most satisfying win of the season for both fan bases. The hatred runs deep, and with the move to the Big Ten Conference, this particular rivalry might have surpassed the Civil War for the Ducks and the Apple Cup for the Huskies.
In their Top 100 list of rivalries in college football, The Athletic has this game as No. 21, falling just outside the Top 20. But for those who have been intimately involved with this rivalry between the Ducks and the Dawgs, the feelings alone make this Top 10 material.
Overall, the Huskies lead the series 63-45-5. Washington dominated the 1970s and 1980s, accounting for the disparity in the record, but the Ducks’ success in the century is helping to make up some of that ground. Oregon won last year’s game 49-21 to secure its perfect 12-0 regular season.
The two programs are joined at the hip in some ways, as they just can’t stay away from each other. When it was obvious the Pac-12 was going to make a significant shift and narrowly disband, the Ducks and Huskies joined forces, for a brief second, to make the move to the Big Ten Conference and keep the rivalry going.
But once that move was complete, they could resume the rivalry. Both teams have experienced wins over one another in recent years, and both have had playoff wins. They’ve also had some coaching changes with a varying degree of success, but with Dan Lanning in Eugene and Jedd Fisch in Seattle, both programs seem to have found their guy for years to come.
