FRISCO, TX — In a typical year, Mike Gundy’s late-July vacation arrives with some clarity about his team.
“I’d have a really good idea of who our two-deep was gonna be, and in most cases, who the starting quarterback was gonna be,” the Oklahoma State coach said Wednesday during Big 12 football media days at The Star.
“I’m gonna try to go on vacation in a week or so, and I’m not sure that I know who will be the starters in eight of the 22 spots, not counting special teams.”
OSU released its updated 114-player roster for preseason camp, and 62 of those players will be first-year Cowboys. Of those 62 newcomers, 33 arrived in June.
So it’s understandable that Gundy doesn’t feel like a two-deep is set as summer winds down.
Of course, that means August will require some serious team building.
“Coaches understand that it’s gonna have to happen faster in August than it ever has before,” Gundy said, “so we can get established, so we can create some identity, hopefully develop some team chemistry and get ready to play in the first game.”
At the center of the Cowboys’ uncertainty is the quarterback competition, which trimmed from a four-man race to just two after spring practice, but is no closer to being settled.
Redshirt freshmen Zane Flores and Hauss Hejny will carry their duel into August, and as Gundy has proven in recent years, he isn’t afraid of playing multiple quarterbacks early in the year.
“We don’t have a quarterback who’s ever played a snap at Oklahoma State,” Gundy said. “It’s one of the things in the future of college football that’s a little bit scary. You don’t have as many guys in that room as you’d want to.
