Five-star running back recruit Derrek Cooper has locked in his commitment date. Cooper is the top ranked running back recruit in the class of 2026 and the No. 12 prospect in the country. The elite running back plans to announce his commitment on Sunday, July 20 at 7 p.m. ET. Cooper was originally slated to announce his decision on July 12, but elected to push back his commitment. In addition to setting his commitment date, Cooper also announced his top five schools. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound running back will decide among Miami, Georgia, Ohio State, Florida State and Texas.
Cooper plays high school football for Chaminade Madonna in Hollywood, Florida, which is the same high school as Ohio State superstar receiver Jeremiah Smith. Cooper is the top recruit in Florida, per Rivals. Both 247Sports and Rivals project that Cooper will stay home and commit to the Miami Hurricanes. The five-star would be an excellent addition to Miami’s class of 2026, which ranks No. 9 in the country.
The Hurricanes are no strangers to winning recruiting battles over Georgia. Miami has flipped a pair of former Georgia commits this recruiting cycle in four-star receiver Vance Spafford and three-star cornerback Jontavius Wyman. Additionally, Miami won a contested battle for five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell over Georgia and other top college football programs.
Cooper took an official visit to Georgia in June and has taken official visits to each of his top schools outside of Texas. The Chaminade Madonna star was committed to Georgia for less than a week in June 2024.
