Iowa State football: Matt Campbell on keeping roster in NIL era
Iowa State football coach Matt Campbell discussed the state of college athletics and the Cyclones being able to retain most of their roster.
Iowa State football is certainly pleased with its tight end depth heading into the 2025 season, with Ben Brahmer, Cooper Alexander and Tyler Moore healthy again, plus Gabe Burkle back in the mix, but the Cyclones are also building towards the future.
On July 11, they got a commitment from 6-foot-6, 240-pound tight end Drake DeBaun. DeBaun is a three-star recruit in the class of 2026, who originally committed to FCS-level South Dakota State, before flipping to Wake Forest, and then ultimately choosing Iowa State after a recent offer from the Cyclones.
According to 247 Sports, he is the No. 12 overall prospect from the state of Kansas in his class, and the No. 70-ranked tight end nationally. The Overland Park, Kansas native is a two-sport standout in basketball and football at Shawnee Mission South High School.
DeBaun excels as a tight end that can contribute with both his blocking and his ability to help out the passing game by exploiting mismatches in opposing defenses. During the 2024 season as a high school junior, he recorded 34 receptions for 397 yards and five touchdowns through nine games.
DeBaun is the 19th commit and the first tight end in the Cyclones’ 2026 recruiting class.
