Notre Dame linebacker commit Ellis McGaskin exhibits quickness and explosiveness when he makes plays on Friday nights, but his defensive coordinator says it’s his football IQ that separates the Williamson (Mobile, AL) product from the rest.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Class of 2027 four-star recruit loves to watch film, which has impressed his DC, Jon Mitchell.
“I think the part that people don’t see is his ability to watch film and take it to the game,” said Mitchell to Irish Sports Daily.
“There have literally been times where he walked in and said, ‘Coach, I know every play they’re going to run,'” he says. “And I’m like, ‘Huh? I don’t even know what plays they’re going to run yet. What you got?'”
McGaskin committed to the Fighting Irish two weeks ago over offers from major programs such as LSU, Florida, Ohio State and Michigan, among several others. He was a star early on, excelling at running back on varsity as an eighth-grader before taking over for linebacker Robert Woodyard after he moved on to Auburn.
McGaskin was ND’s second commit in the 2027 class after the pledge of long snapper Sean Kraft.
