SEC a superconference says SEC commissioner Greg Sankey

The latest round of conference realignment that watched the SEC and Big Ten strengthen their brands with the top programs from the Big 12 (Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC) and Pac-12 (Oregon, UCLA, Washington, and USC to the Big Ten) sparked conversation of the future of college football featuring a “super conference,” one that would be made up of the SEC and Big Ten and maybe a few programs from the Big 12 and ACC.

Speaking to the media on the first day of SEC media days, Southeastern Conference commissioner Greg Sankey made it clear that the SEC is already in one.

“There is joy embedded in what we do, and we take pride in what was accomplished last year,” Sankey said. Our first as a 16-member, what I think is a “superconference,” for all those of you who like to speculate about superconferences, welcome to one.”

Sankey shared that the SEC made up 40% of all college football viewership hours across linear platforms. The Big Ten made up 30%.

Though just three SEC teams made it into the College Football Playoff in 2024, it was a league that was competitive top to bottom, with everyone other than Mississippi State pulling off a big win during the regular season.

Sankey’s belief in the SEC is a big reason why they won’t move to a nine-game schedule, despite pressure from the other Power Four conferences, unless it makes sense for the SEC.

Sankey also lauded his league’s regionality and with the addition of Oklahoma and Texas bringing back historical matchups between the Longhorns and Texas A&M and Oklahoma and Missouri, a game tha’s been played nearly 100 times.

“We have common-sense geography, restored rivalries, and record-breaking viewership.”
