Five-star defensive lineman James Johnson has flipped his commitment from the Georgia Bulldogs to the Texas Longhorns. Johnson’s decision is the second recruiting loss of the day for Georgia to Texas. The Longhorns also beat Georgia to add a commitment from five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson.
Johnson’s decision comes just under three weeks after he initially committed to Georgia on June 28. Johnson’s decommitment is a big blow to Georgia’s class of 2026. The Bulldogs are down to 28 total commitments and lost their highest ranked defensive line commitment in Johnson.
The 6-foot-3, 285-pound defensive lineman plays high school football for Northwestern High School in Miami, Florida. He recorded 60 tackles and five sacks during his junior season of high school, which was limited due to a knee injury. Johnson is Rivals’ No. 1 defensive line prospect in the class of 2026 and the No. 10 recruit in the nation.
Following Johnson’s decommitment, Georgia still has the No. 2 recruiting class in the country. The Dawgs still have a solid recruiting class, but have to be concerned after losing several consecutive key recruiting battles with Texas. The Longhorns also beat out Georgia to sign class of 2025 five-star defensive lineman Justus Terry.
It should come as no surprise that Texas has been named as the biggest spender in college football. The Longhorns have won many recruiting battles thanks to name, image and likeness money like most other top college football programs including Georgia. However, it is surprising that Kirby Smart and Georgia are not even ranked among the top 10 biggest spenders in the nation.
