The season is getting closer.
New Mexico State began its fall football camp on July 30 and will hold 15 practices during it until Aug. 16, two weeks before its Aug. 30 opener against Bryant. It’s a chance for second-year coach Tony Sanchez and his staff to see the many new players who arrived after spring football, and for many to fight for a starting spot on this year’s Aggies team.
What were the most notable moments from the start of camp? Here are some notes from the Aggies’ first three practices:
Injury updates
Four players — defensive end Jaden Robinson, linebacker Chance Barron and defensive backs Siddeeq Shabazz and Saveon Freeman — have started fall camp on the sidelines.
Robinson is dealing with the same ankle issues that held him to six games last season, but Sanchez said he should return in the next couple of weeks. Barron, however, is likely to miss the entire season with an ACL injury.
Return dates for Freeman and Shabazz are unknown, but Sanchez is hopeful to have Freeman before the season starts.

Four players — returners Kai Wheeler and Sioeli Helu, true freshman JR Hecklinski and East Texas A&M transfer Santos Valdez — have taken snaps at center, where NM State lacks someone with starting experience. Sanchez spoke highly of Wheeler in a Wednesday interview, hoping he seizes his opportunity to start.
“He’s the guy that we really want to see take the bull by the horns,” Sanchez said. “He’s got all the intangibles. He’s had a hell of an offseason. He’s an intelligent guy (and a) good player.”
