Since Colin Cowherd’s Nick Saban/Cleveland Browns conspiracy theory has fallen apart, now he has a new angle.
“We all know the stories that one conference was paying dudes. Often through different sources and other schools weren’t,” Cowherd said on The Herd.
“The other thing is … I also think that Nick Saban was almost revolutionary and a lot of SEC teams were bailing on coaches maybe a year before they should’ve.”
Cowherd said Saban’s greatness screwed the rest of the league.
“That he (Saban) was such a disruptor and so dominant that Nick kinda screwed the whole conference up. Like if you couldn’t beat Nick, they were gonna flush out [coaches]… It’s like, ‘Guys … that’s the best program in the history of the sport.’”
He’s not wrong. Several SEC teams have gone through several head coaches over the years when Saban was in Tuscaloosa. Auburn alone is working on its fifth coach in 18 years, 17 of which Saban was at Alabama.
So was Tennessee. It took the Vols several head coaches and 16 years until they were able to finally defeat Alabama in Knoxville in 2022. Saban’s influence can be seen across the conference as a number of his former assistants are all head coaches in this league, all trying to duplicate Saban’s success.
The only coach so far who has been able to match Saban’s success has been Kirby Smart at Georgia. He has won two national championships and three SEC titles, but still has a losing record against his former boss.
Nick Saban changed the SEC and revolutionized how this conference runs. The man is still sharp as a tack and has warned against the many changes that have happened in college football. That’s why, despite his age, there are NFL and college football teams still are clamoring for his services.
