LSU football is set at QB1 with Garrett Nussmeier returning for year five. With Nussmeier locked in, the competition in the room is for QB2.
LSU has two scholarship quarterbacks behind Nussmeier — Michael Van Buren and Colin Hurley.
Van Buren was a member of LSU’s 2025 transfer portal class after playing at Mississippi State in 2024. Hurley signed with LSU out of high school in 2024 as a four-star and the No. 23-ranked passer in the nation.
Van Buren saw plenty of action serving as Mississippi State’s starter down the stretch. He looked like a freshman at times, but there were plenty of bright spots. Hurley took a redshirt with LSU and missed spring practice after a January car accident. His recovery went to plan and he’s fully healthy now.
Both players are young and LSU head coach Brian Kelly is looking for more consistency from LSU’s quarterback depth.
“I think it’s the details. You know, they’re talented players. Both of them can play in the SEC, but talent is just one thing, right? You’ve got to be able to not have those moments where, you know, the ball’s on the ground or, you know, you throw a six,” Kelly said.
Van Buren started eight games for Mississippi State in 2024. He completed 140 passes for 1,885 yards and 11 scores. Van Buren has a strong deep ball, but his completion percentage was under 55% and he threw seven picks.
“I just want them to eliminate the big mistakes. Let them be athletes. Let them be who they are. They’re not the same quarterback. They have different kind of traits,” Kelly said.
Hurley reclassified as a recruit, meaning he entered college on the younger side. He was 16 when he enrolled at LSU, and after missing spring practice, it’s understandable if he still has a ways to go in his development.
“They’ve had their moments. We need to get it to a point where it’s much more consistent,” Kelly said.
