Across the Alabama Crimson Tide’s 2025 football roster, you could certainly make an argument that few players are more intriguing than sophomore Jaylen Mbakwe.
A former top recruit, Mbakwe spent his true freshman season a year ago on the defensive side of the ball, making an impact at cornerback where he compiled 15 tackles, one TFL, and one interception across 12 games.
However, fast forward to now, and Mbakwe has since made a position change, moving to the offensive side of the ball where the former top recruit is set to play wide receiver for the Crimson Tide this upcoming season.
Having practiced there throughout fall camp so far as well, Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was recently asked on what he has seen from Mbakwe at wide receiver, doing so after Tuesday’s practice in Tuscaloosa.
“I think Jaylen is one of the guys we haven’t talked about a bunch, but I think he’s really settling into his role as a receiver,” Grubb said. “He’s improving on route running. I think his hands are getting better, securing the football. I think he’s doing a really nice job. He’s showing up quite a bit already.”
Alabama’s top three wide receivers are already set entering the 2025 season in Ryan Williams, Germie Bernard, and Isaiah Horton, while others such as Rico Scott and Cole Adams are included among the names who are expected to play significant roles.
Making the number change as well from No. 9 to No. 3, could Mbakwe potentially emerge into one of Alabama’s top wideouts this fall? Time will ultimately tell.
