UConn wide receiver Skyler Bell was one of 47 players named to the preseason watch list for the 2025 Biletnikoff Award, which goes to the best receiver in the nation, on Wednesday.
Transferring in from Wisconsin last offseason, Bell made an immediate impact as he led the Huskies with 860 yards and five touchdowns on 50 catches, including 141 yards on five catches in the season-opener at Maryland. Bell tied UConn’s school record for touchdown catches in a game when he hauled in three in an 153-yard performance against Buffalo, and recorded his fourth 100-yard game of the season in a tight loss at Syracuse.
The Bronx native, who attended the Taft School in Watertown, averaged 17.2 yards per catch last season, ranking 37th among the nation’s top receivers.
“My (focus this offseason) was on getting stronger at the catch point, after the catch point, running through more tackles, breaking more tackles and just being a bigger, more physical receiver,” he said at Media Day last week.
Bell notably turned down an offer from Michigan shortly after he had 77 receiving yards and a touchdown for the Huskies in the Fenway Bowl.
“Everything about it was great, but I just think the idea of finishing what you started here, leaving this place better than you found it. I think the guys we had last year, especially the seniors, did a great job of that, so I just want to build on that, not only for myself but for Connecticut, for UConn to hopefully get this program back to Power Five level and get UConn (football’s) name back on the map.”
