Stanford makes decision at starting quarterback – Deseret News

When BYU hosts Stanford in Week 2 of the 2025 season, both teams will have relatively new starting quarterbacks.

Though there’s been no clear determination on who will be the Cougars’ starter, the Cardinal reportedly have chosen a signal caller.

Ben Gulbranson has earned the starting nod as Stanford’s quarterback, according to multiple national reports. The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel was first to report the news.

Gulbranson is a sixth-year senior who played the previous five seasons at Oregon State.

He appeared in 18 games for the Beavers, with 11 starts, and completed 61.8% of his passes while throwing for 2,648 yards, 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions at Oregon State. He also ran for six touchdowns.

Last season, Gulbranson threw for 943 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions.

As a redshirt sophomore in 2022, he went 7-1 as a starter.

Gulbranson was in a quarterback competition with UCF transfer Dylan Rizk and redshirt freshman Elijah Brown.

Bear Bachmeier, who is in battle to become BYU’s starting quarterback with McCae Hillstead and Treyson Bourget, transferred from Stanford after spring ball.

Gulbranson and Stanford will open the season in a Week 0 matchup against Hawaii on Aug. 30.

The Cardinal visit BYU on Sept. 6. The game kick offs at 8:15 p.m. MDT and will be televised on ESPN.
