Michigan football is hoping that it can rebound in a big way in 2025 after a disappointing 2024 that did come with a thrilling finish.
The Wolverines went 8-5 last year, but were 5-6 entering the penultimate regular season game against Northwestern. After the first blowout win of the season, the maize and blue shocked by going on the road to Columbus, upsetting eventual national champion Ohio State despite being three-score underdogs. Then, another shocking victory: this time in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Alabama.
With a potentially functional offense, and what’s expected to still be an elite defense, there are high hopes in Ann Arbor — but not much elsewhere.
Case in point: CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford did some preseason predictions of every bowl game and the Wolverines are not in his College Football Playoff projection, but they are in one of the premier non-playoff bowl games. However, the matchup might upset some.
It’s one thing to have a rematch from the regular season in the playoffs or in a conference championship game (though we aren’t a fan of either thing), but in a non-playoff bowl game? That’s what he has, with his prediction being that Michigan and Oklahoma will meet on December 31 in the Citrus Bowl.
The Wolverines are set to travel to Norman to face the Sooners in Week 2 of the regular season. What’s more, they’re due to face off in Ann Arbor next season in Week 2, as well — meaning that the two unlikely foes would play each other three times in just over a calendar year.
Given the expectations of the season, while fans might be somewhat disappointed with not making the playoff, chances are that fans would be even more so having to see Oklahoma so many times in one year.
