St. John’s Prep’s Chris Vargas throws a 4th-quarter touchdown

St. John’s Prep’s star freshman quarterback lead the way for the Eagles in a 28-0 win over BC High at home Friday night.

St. John’s Prep sophomore quarterback Christopher Vargas had one of the biggest moments of his young football career on Wednesday, Aug. 13 after he became aware that he just made history in Massachusetts.

According to M2 QB Academy on X, Vargas became the first-ever composite five-star quarterback in Massachusetts history per 247 Sports. The recruit ranking website lists Vargas as the number two quarterback in the class of 2028 behind IMG Academy’s Jayden Wade.

Vargas said he heard the news just hours before his team was slated to take part in the first ever Massachusetts High School Football Media Day at Needham High School.

“It’s just a reflection of how much work I’ve put into this,” Vargas said.

The 6’4, 175-pound signal caller already has offers from seven Division 1 FBS colleges: Boston College, Illinois, Ohio State, Penn State, Syracuse, UConn, and UMass Amherst.

As a freshman starter in 2024, Vargas led the Prep to a 10-win season and appearance in the MIAA Division 1 semifinals. He threw for 1,311 yards, 17 touchdowns and three interceptions, according to 247 Sports website.

“He’s a high-profile guy for a reason,” St. John’s Prep coach Brian St. Pierre said. “I think what people that don’t know him see when they meet him is what a human he is. He’s the most humble, unassuming guy. You’d never know he’s got the hype around him that he does.”
