PISCATAWAY – It’s on to Ohio for Rutgers football.
The Scarlet Knights played their second and final scrimmage of training camp Saturday inside SHI Stadium, one day before Greg Schiano’s team officially breaks camp and begins turning its full attention to the Aug. 28 season opener.
“There are some position battles for backup spots, there are some position battles for starter spots,” Schiano said. “This tape we’ll watch closely again, as we did last week.”
Schiano and his coaching staff need to finalize the depth chart in the coming days, with some positions far more clear than others.
The Scarlet Knights have clarity at quarterback with QB1 Athan Kaliakmanis and his backup AJ Surace, but there are questions at running back in terms of how exactly carries will be shared, along the offensive line, defensive line and in the secondary.
One of the biggest questions centers on who will replace left tackle Hollin Pierce, who’s now in camp with the Philadelphia Eagles. Pierce left some big shoes to fill – literally.
While Tyler Needham is the leading contender for the job, others have been making their case to Schiano and offensive line coach Pat Flaherty.
Right tackle is also unclear at this point if Needham slides to the left side.
“Some guys injected themselves into the picture by playing well,” Schiano said. “So it probably clouded the picture more but that’s OK. That’s a good cloud. A couple guys got bumped so they couldn’t go continuously through. That also gave those guys a chance to show what they can do. I think overall we come out of it with better depth at the tackle position. But not sure we’re certain who’s going to be the starting two.”
