High School Football: Council Rock South, Frankford Week 1 highlights
The 2025 season kicked off with a bang for Council Rock South, as the Golden Hawks dominated Frankford, 50-8.
NEWTOWN — Council Rock South believes this can be a football season to remember.
With 10 starters back on each side of the ball, the Golden Hawks plan on returning to the District One Class 6A playoffs after missing out with a 4-6 record in 2024. They went 7-4 and made districts the year before.
“We had a lot of sophomores and juniors starting,” said senior Nate Szydlik, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound all-state selection as a junior linebacker. “It definitely helped us get experience for this season.”
CR South began the 2025 campaign with a 50-8victory over Frankford at Walt Snyder Stadium on Friday night. Frankford, which plays in the Philadelphia Public League, went 9-3 last season.
Szydlik injured his left shoulder on a hard tackle midway through the first quarter after scoring on a 26-yard touchdown run and didn’t return. His status for next week is unclear.
“With as many guys coming back, we are able to get into much more detail with our systems and it gives us the opportunity to be much more creative,” said CRS head coach CJ Szydlik, who is Nate’s uncle, before the game.
One player Nate Szydlik has been impressed by is 6-2, 190-pound junior Marley Emerson, a returning starter at quarterback.
Szydlik had 101 tackles, including 17 for loss, along with four sacks, six forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries a year ago after a strong sophomore campaign.
“We’re definitely expecting to make a run in the District One (6A) playoffs,” Szydlik said. “And we want to win the Suburban One Continental title.”
