We are less than a week away from the Virginia Tech Hokies opening the 2025 college football season against the No. 13 South Carolina Gamecocks. The main storyline heading into next week’s Week 1 encounter is the Beamer family. South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer is a Virginia Tech graduate and the son of legendary Hall of Fame coach Frank Beamer.
Frank Beamer played at Virginia Tech and returned to his alma mater in 1987, spending the next 29 years as head coach of the Hokies. During his time with the Hokies, Beamer led the school to unprecedented heights, even reaching the national championship game in 1999. Shane Beamer was a member of that team.
Shane now enters his fifth season as head coach of the Gamecocks, where he has a record of 29-22. Big things are expected of South Carolina in 2025. The Gamecocks have one of college football’s best quarterbacks in LaNorris Sellers. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Sellers is a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender and a primary reason why the Gamecocks have such expectations.
So, it’s no surprise that next week’s game in Atlanta sees South Carolina as a big favorite. Per FanDuel, the Gamecocks are a 7.5-point favorite over the Hokies. Here are the odds for next Sunday’s game.

This is the first meeting between the Hokies and Gamecocks since 1991. That was the year that South Carolina joined the SEC. Before the Gamecocks landed in the SEC, the two regional rivals played semi-regularly, with the ‘Cocks holding an 11-7-2 advantage over the Hokies.
