At long last, the offseason is behind us, and college football has returned. For Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks, that means that the Montana State Bobcats are coming to Eugene this weekend to kick off the 2025 campaign.
Despite an almost entirely fresh roster that features just four returning starters, there are high expectations for the Ducks once again this season as they look to repeat as Big Ten Champions and make it back to the College Football Playoff. For those unfamiliar with ESPN’s FPI, it is an index that “relies on past performance on offense and defense, returning and transfer production, and past recruiting data for players on the roster to form a rating.” In essence, it’s ESPN’s way of declaring the top teams in the nation, examining their roster, schedule, and percentage of winning each game, and ultimately determining where that lands them after the season concludes.
In short, it examines Oregon’s 2025 schedule and predicts the percentage of wins the Ducks need to achieve in each game. Throughout the year, the numbers change based on past performance, injuries, and other variables.
