The spring window of the transfer portal is starting to get going and Michigan football isn’t immune to losing some players. The Wolverines already lost linebacker Jason Hewlett — one of the four Ohio-based 2023 class pledges who committed after Michigan beat Ohio State — and the defense is apparently getting even thinner.
Expected to be a standout player in the defensive backfield, things never quite materialized for cornerback Ja’Den McBurrows. Oft-injured, McBurrows struggled to see the field, but thrived when he did. Starting at nickel for Mike Sainristil in the Maryland game in 2023 (as Sainristil moved outside), he held his own. But injuries kept him from playing much in 2024, and though the position is open again in 2025, it appears he’ll play elsewhere.
According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, McBurrows is entering the transfer portal.
Michigan has reportedly working out six players at the nickel position this spring, including Zeke Berry (who is expected to play boundary), Mason Curtis, Tevis Metcalf, and Jeremiah Lowe, among others. With McBurrows gone, the cornerback depth, which was already thin, will be a little thinner.
A former three-star from Fort Lauderdale, McBurrows had a lot of high-end offers including Alabama and LSU. This season would have been his fifth year with the Wolverines.
