Redshirt senior Tony Johnson, who caught one-third of quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s touchdown passes for the Cincinnati Bearcats in 2024 is on the move in the transfer portal. His name was officially entered Friday afternoon.

Johnson was held out of the recent spring showcase scrimmage and the Bearcats do have depth at receiver, but the 5-foot-11, 185-pounder seemed to have a connection with Sorsby last season.

Third on the team in catches with 48 behind Xzavier Henderson and Joe Royer, Johnson caught six scoring passes. The native of Ocala, Florida had one of his better games near his hometown when he snared eight balls for 76 yards at UCF last Oct. 12 in a 19-13 UC victory.

Before UC, Johnson played three seasons at Florida Atlantic with his best season being in 2023 when he caught 37 passes for 411 and four touchdowns.

Possibly factoring in Johnson’s departure was the offseason acquisitions of Cyrus Allen from Texas A&M, Noah Jennings from Charleston Southern, Jeff Caldwell from Lindenwood University, Caleb Goodie from Colorado State plus a number of receivers already on the roster that have matured and developed.

The transfer portal runs through April 25. Thus far in college football’s version of the free-for-all (though not monetarily) UC has lost defensive backs Ken Willis and Jordan Robinson and now Johnson. They also have numerous visits forthcoming from the NCAA swap shop.
