Washington State’s Kyle Williams selected by Patriots in third round o…

Mateer transferred to Oklahoma in December.

With his QB in the portal and his coach taking the reins at Wake Forest, Williams still chose to play in the DirecTV Holiday Bowl in December versus Syracuse. In his final game of his college career, he totaled 10 catches for 172 yards and a touchdown to cap his first collegiate 1,000-yard season. His 172 yards surpassed Dez Bryant for a Holiday Bowl record.

The QB who tossed those 10 Holiday Bowl passes was first-time Football Bowl Subdivision starter Zevi Eckhaus, who was eager to praise his former teammate following the Cougars’ spring scrimmage on April 12.

“He doesn’t let the knowledge of him being a talented player slow him down from how hard he works,” Eckhaus said of Williams. “Whoever gets Kyle Williams, you’re gonna get a hell of a player. You’re gonna get a hell of a worker. Yeah, I’m really excited to see where that guy goes.”

Williams is the 202nd player to end his college career with the Cougs and go on to be selected in the NFL draft.

He is the first WSU wide receiver to be drafted since Dezmon Patmon, who was selected No. 212 overall by the Indianapolis Colts in 2020.
