Wide receiver Jaylin Lane didn’t have to wait too long to hear his name called after teammate Bhayshul Tuten was selected in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL draft. The Washington Commanders selected Lane with the No. 128 overall pick.
After beginning his career at Middle Tennessee State, the Clover, South Carolina, native transferred to Virginia Tech ahead of the 2023 season. In 2023, Lane started every game, and finished with 41 receptions for 538 yards (13.1 yards per reception) and six touchdowns.
In 2024, Lane played in 12 games, recording 38 receptions for 466 yards (12.3 YPC) and also rushed for two touchdowns. For his Virginia Tech career, Lane also returned a punt for a touchdown.
Between MTSU and VT, Lane caught 203 career passes for 2,532 yards and 18 touchdowns.
A poor offensive scheme at Virginia Tech and less-than-stellar quarterback play limited Lane’s production. A steady college career followed by elite testing numbers made Lane a priority among NFL teams. With the Commanders, he immediately becomes their top punt returner and will find a role in the offense led by quarterback Jayden Daniels.

“As good a football player as Jaylin is, he’s an even better person,” Pry said. “Off the field, Jaylin is known for his humility, leadership, and genuine care for others. He was named the Virginia College Football Humanitarian of the Year this past season for his outreach in the community. On the field, he is a versatile receiver who can stretch defenses. His speed helps him to get separation from defenders, and he is productive after the catch. He is also a proven returner who will have an opportunity to earn touches in the NFL.”
