The NFL is a curious beast in the way it operates. Sometimes it is questionable, but often, especially times like this, it is a story of a guy getting a much-deserved chance to live out their professional football dreams.
Former Iowa Hawkeyes quarterback and Utah State Aggies quarterback Spencer Petras is getting that opportunity. The California kid has received invites to two NFL minicamps after the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Spencer Petras will be attending the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers minicamps in back-to-back weekends. He will have the opportunity to compete in front of two of the league’s top coaches in the Chiefs’ Andy Reid and the Chargers’ Jim Harbaugh.
These invites come after Petras recently helped out at Iowa’s Pro Day, throwing to receivers in front of NFL scouts and even earned the recognition and compliment from head coach Kirk Ferentz.
“He’s a really smart, smart guy. I think he’s going to get into coaching at some point. He’s really sharp. He knows what’s going on and he understands the game pretty well. I think he’s going to give it a shot in the NFL. He threw it really well the other day,” Ferentz said about Petras.
Following five years with Iowa, Petras transferred to Utah State last year, where he really blossomed. For the Aggies, Petras threw for 2,315 yards while completing 65.4% of his passes to go with 17 touchdowns. All three were career highs for the California native.
