Battle of top freshmen goes to DeLand 41-35 at Lake Brantley

The spring football game at Lake Brantley on Friday night was billed as a battle between the top two freshman in Central Florida, and they did not disappoint.

DeLand’s 2028 running back Taihj Moore ran for more than 200 yards and two touchdowns in overcoming Lake Brantley and quarterback Jackson Stecher in a 41-35 shootout.

Stecher threw for nearly 400 yards and five touchdowns and showed signs that he potentially could be the best quarterback to ever come out of the Orlando area. He actually threw one other TD pass, but it was called back on a holding penalty.

“I felt it was a good game, but I also felt we left a lot on the table out there,” Stecher said. “That game should have been a win. We need to clean up some mistakes over the summer, but overall a good game for us.

“I classify myself as a winner, so this one hurts, but I put a lot of this game on me, on my shoulders and I know I need to clean some stuff and come back harder.”

The game was marred by penalties as both teams made numerous mistakes, but there was no mistaking the potential for explosive plays by both offenses.

Moore’s performance was equally as impressive as that from Stecher. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Moore showed his ability to see the holes up front and also his toughness. Moore takes a hit and keeps on going, often carrying two or three tacklers for extra yardage.

But it’s not just his strength. He also showed his burst of speed, getting to the second level and then turning it on. He broke away from several would-be tacklers late in the contest and raced to a 75-yard…
