Texas A&M football’s Ar’maj Reed-Adams discusses being named a captain and how nothing has changed for him as he’s always viewed himself as a leader.
COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M football’s season-opening clash with UTSA is about 90 days away.
The Aggies will welcome the Road Runners to Kyle Field on Aug. 30 to kick off Year 2 under head coach Mike Elko. The former defensive coordinator looks to build on an 8-5 first season that ended with a disappointing 1-4 finish after starting out 7-1.
A&M has been active this spring, adding talent, bringing in 13 players via the transfer portal and laying the groundwork for what Elko wants his program to look like.
Sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed will look to improve an offense that averaged 405.8 yards per game (49th in the country) and 3.04 points (50th). The defense allowed 367.3 yards (63rd) and held opponents to 22.23 points (35th).
With spring practice concluded, here are three questions for the Aggies to answer as they break for the summer:
The development of Marcel Reed, the leader
Plenty of attention will be paid to the Aggies’ new starting quarterback, Marcel Reed, and his physical development as he enters his redshirt sophomore season as A&M’s QB1 for the first time. However, being the starting quarterback at A&M often involves several intangibles that will also be evaluated.
Teammates and coaches have called upon Reed to step up as a leader, and how the young QB from Nashville, Tenn., will handle that responsibility this year is still to be determined.
Earlier this spring, linebacker Tauren York, a team captain, spoke of Reed and his newfound responsibilities, offering his friend and teammate a challenge.
