A former Clemson Tigers star is under consideration for College Football Hall of Fame induction for the class of 2026.
The National Football Foundation (NFF) on Monday announced the names of 79 former players and coaches that are under consideration for Hall of Fame induction. Former Clemson defensive back and special teams standout Donnell Woolford is on the ballot for the 2026 class.
Woolford played four years for the Tigers from 1985-88 under legendary coach Danny Ford and was a member of three straight Clemson ACC championship teams from ’86-88.
As a return specialist, Woolford led the ACC in punt return yards for two consecutive seasons in 1987 and ’88. He had 326 punt return yards (15.5 AVG) and two touchdowns on 21 returns in 1987 and totaled four interceptions in 11 games as Clemson finished 10-2 and defeated Penn State, 35-10, in the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1, 1988. The Tigers were No. 12 in the final AP Top 25 poll.
In his senior season, Woolford led the ACC with 192 punt return yards on 27 returns (7.1 AVG). The Tigers were conference championships for the third consecutive season and again finished 10-2 while defeating Oklahoma, 13-6, in the Citrus Bowl. Clemson finished No. 9 in the final AP poll that season.
Woolford finished his Clemson career with 724 punt return yards and nine interceptions in 43 games. He holds the school record for career pass breakups (44) and punt returns for touchdown. Woolford was selected 11th overall by the Chicago Bears and coach Mike Ditka in the 1989 NFL Draft.
The official announcement for the 2026 Hall of Fame class will be made early next year.
