A Big Ten coach received a contract extension, which became official on Wednesday. Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck officially signed a contract extension on Wednesday. He earned the extension following eight strong years with the Golden Gophers.
The deal extends Fleck’s original seven-year extension that he signed in 2022 to include updated changes in retention bonuses and buyout terms. With the new deal, Fleck receives an extension bonus that is split each year on September 1 and December 31.
It starts with a $1,000,000 bonus this season and will increase by $100,000 each year, culminating in a maximum bonus of $1,600,000 in 2030.
There is also Fleck’s buyout, which stands at $5,500,000 if he were to leave in 2025. The buyout decreases to $4.5 million in 2026, $3 million in 2027, $2 million in 2028, and $1 million in 2029.
If Fleck ends up being fired by the Golden Gophers, he will receive a termination fee equal to 70% of his base salary, supplemental compensation, and retention bonus.
Fleck is one of the most successful coaches in school history, sitting fifth in program history for overall wins (58) and games coached (97). He is also fourth in school history in Big Ten wins (34).
Fleck is 58-39 in eight seasons in Minnesota, going 6-0 in bowl games since joining the team. He also led the Golden Gophers to an 11-win season back in 2019, winning a share of the then-Big Ten West Division. Fleck only suffered two losing seasons, going 5-7 in his first season and 3-4 in the shortened 2020 season.
He is also one of two head coaches in Minnesota history to record three nine-win seasons. He is also tied for the most eight-win seasons in program history for the Golden Gophers, currently standing with four.
