Offensive line coach Glen Elarbee discusses Vols replacing Cooper Mays

Tennessee practiced for a fifth time during fall training camp on Tuesday at Haslam Field. The Vols will open their 2025 football season on Aug. 30 versus Syracuse at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

Kickoff between the Vols and Orange is slated for noon EDT and will be televised by ABC.

Following practice on Tuesday, fifth-year offensive line coach Glen Elarbee discussed replacing center Cooper Mays. The former Vol played at Tennessee from 2020-24. He was Tennessee’s starting center in all 13 games in 2024 and allowed one sack in 887 offensive snaps.

“Coop, it’s unbelievable what he has been able to do mentally and physically, so it’s a big set of shoes to fill,” Elarbee said. “I really do think (William) Satterwhite and Sam (Pendleton) are both competing their butts off.

“They’re in extra, they’re working at it. They’re sharing at practice. There are things you have to clean up, but they’re trying to learn every single day. We’ll be there. The best thing we have is competition, so those guys have to keep fighting to see who actually gets to go out there.”
