FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas football held its first scrimmage of its preseason camp Saturday inside Razorback Stadium.
Media members were not permitted to watch, but head coach Sam Pittman and a Razorbacks spokesperson provided stats and notable details from the closed scrimmage that featured roughly 140 plays.
Here are some notable insights on what transpired during the biggest portion of 11-on-11 work this preseason.
Arkansas football offense shines with big plays
Pittman acknowledged that the offense had the upper-hand on Saturday, scoring three times within the first 15 plays of the scrimmage.
That portion of practice featured the No. 1 offense going against the No. 2 defense. Quarterback Taylen Green found Mike Washington on a 62-yard pass, and Washington scored later on the drive with a four-yard run.
Washington also had a 40-yard touchdown and an 18-yard touchdown reception. According to Pittman, the transfer running back from New Mexico State was the standout performer.
“(Washington’s) fast. He can break tackles. He seems to set up blocks well, but he seems like he can run forever,” Pittman said. “The first play of live tackling on the year he goes to the house on a little stretch play. He can make you miss.”
Green also had a pair of 15-yard passes to O’Mega Blake and a 20-yard completion to tight end Jaden Platt.
The second-team offense also had a strong day. Against the first-team defense, KJ Jackson completed a 63-yard touchdown to Monte Harrison.
That combination also linked up for a 70-yard touchdown and a 45-yard completion against the second-team defense. Jackson hit Rohan Jones for a 45-yard pass that stood out to Pittman.
“KJ has really been playing well and running the offense well,” Pittman said. “Bobby’s (Petrino) done a nice job of that, and he’s done a good job of learning the offense as well.”
