PISCATAWAY – Rutgers football has just less than three weeks before its season opener against Ohio, and on Saturday the Scarlet Knights took the field inside SHI Stadium for its first scrimmage of training camp.

Rutgers has position battles on both sides of the ball, and this was a big opportunity for players to make an impression and create some separation for themselves.

“A good, long scrimmage,” coach Greg Schiano said. “A lot of plays. Everybody got a chance to go compete, which is just what we needed.”

Here are some of Schiano’s thoughts on what he saw:

New-look defense adjusting, but still plenty to work on

There’s a lot of changes with the Scarlet Knights’ defense, both personnel- and coaching-wise.

Rutgers needs to replace several starters, especially on the defensive line. And the unit as a whole is adjusting to the scheme that new co-coordinators Robb Smith and Zach Sparber are installing.

Saturday’s scrimmage showed some good things, but also some growing pains.

“There were some breakdowns defensively, gave up a couple of big plays,” Schiano said. “I think we have to execute with more precision. I don’t think we’re far off but you don’t have to be far off. We have to make sure we’re fitting the runs more precisely and we’re playing with technique in the pass game. We did some good things on third down and that kind of stuff. But we’ve got to stop the run.”

Some of the biggest question marks are at linebacker, where depth is relatively unproven beyond likely starters Dariel Djabome and Moses Walker. The Scarlet Knights also need to replace defensive end Aaron Lewis, as well as defensive tackles Kyonte Hamilton and Malcolm Ray, among others.
