The Oklahoma Sooners are a couple of weeks into fall camp for the 2025 season. The season begins in 17 days. Though the offense has received a lot of the focus this offseason, it’s the defense that brings back a ton of production from the unit that was one of the best in the nation last year.
Venables has a defense that he’s built from the ground up. It’s filled with players he and his defensive staff have recruited over the last four cycles. As many as nine of the projected 11 starters on defense were recruited by this staff. Only defensive tackle Damonic Williams and defensive end Marvin Jones Jr. are transfers who have a chance to start for the Sooners in week one.
It’s a group littered with talent up and down the two-deep depth chart. But who are the top names to watch this season? Here are the 10 best players on Oklahoma’s defense heading into 2025.
10. Marvin Jones, Jr., DE
The Oklahoma Sooners have one of the best pass rushers in the game in R Mason Thomas. But they need a secondary edge rusher that can provide a lot of pressure to take pressure off of Thomas and off of Oklahoma’s pass defense. Marvin Jones Jr. had five sacks last season with Florida State and was a former five-star prospect. He’s got great size, and the tools are there to be productive for Oklahoma’s defense. Entering his final season, the Sooners need Jones to have a career year.
9. Gentry Williams, CB
It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Gentry Williams full-time with the Oklahoma Sooners. But when he was out there full-time, he was a problem for opposing passing games. Back in fall camp and healthy, Williams is looking to lock down one side of the field. With Eli Bowen out, there’s not a lot of experience the Sooners are working with at corner. Williams is a playmaker and they need him on the field.
