Lakeland, Western Wayne get ready for scrimmages – Scranton Times-Tribune

SCOTT TWP. – David Naniewicz and his senior teammates concluded their final two-day summer camp with a focused practice, emphasizing efficiency to prepare for Saturday’s home scrimmage against Tunkhannock at 10 a.m.

Lakeland quickly ran through a series of plays and then gathered after the final session of the week Friday. For Naniewicz in particular, who has been on varsity since his freshman season, he took the time to celebrate while maintaining his focus on the team’s goals.

He is one of the leaders of the Chiefs, who have taken some lumps while developing young talent since winning a District 2 Class 2A championship two years ago. The seniors are more confident after gaining experience and reaching the playoffs last season.

“The past two weeks have been really great,” Naniewicz said. “The bond we have built as a team, you know, is better than it’s been the last two years. We worked hard this offseason, incorporating speed and agility. It’s been really great.”

Naniewicz, 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, earned a spot on the Lackawanna Football Conference Division II all-star berth as a defensive end last season. He also completed 101 passes for 1,023 yards and 11 touchdowns and ran for 484 yards and seven touchdowns in his second season as a starter.

“My last camp has been an amazing experience,” Naniewicz said. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better. To go through it with the same guys has been really great, and we are ready for Week 1.”

Lakeland enters the season with optimism. The Chiefs have 10 starters returning on offense and nine on defense. Gavin Roberts ran for 215 yards and had 18 receptions for 186 yards and three touchdowns as a running back and had 42 tackles with four for loss despite missing four games with an injury.
