Does Kalen DeBoer want Alabama football A Day scrimmage against another team?

Kalen DeBoer wants control. It’s why Alabama football’s A Day spring game April 12 at Bryant-Denny Stadium will be “more of a practice.”

It’s a controlled setting for the Crimson Tide. With controlled reps.

For DeBoer, the event itself was a non-negotiable.

“We understand the significance, and everyone loves football here. And so we want to give that day, make it available, show off our guys and let our guys do their thing,” DeBoer said. “To me, it’s not about the portal concern that I know everyone makes it out to be. It’s just that we’re very careful. We ran a lot of reps, but we’re very specific. And sometimes, you almost have to stop things to get the right groups of people to get a quality rep for all 22 guys that are on the football field. That practice-type environment is something that best accomplishes both the things for the fans that we want to do with the A Day, and for our football team to utilize practice 15 and continue to get better.”

But DeBoer admitted that his opinion on A Day, on the spring games to come may not be a firm one. It’s just the one that fits best now.

Especially in a world where the era of “spring game” is changing, with Colorado coach Deion Sanders calling for programs to be able to scrimmage against other teams, and not just themselves, to “style it like the pros,” Sanders said.

It’s an idea DeBoer has thought about. He said there are benefits to it. But based on Alabama’s current roster and its state of injuries mostly from the 2024 season, it’s not something the Alabama coach viewed as feasible for this team.

“This year, I definitely wouldn’t be wanting to have that type of scrimmage,” DeBoer said. “I think every program can do what they want to do. To me, it’s about making ourselves better.”

Alabama will hold its A Day spring game at noon April 12 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
