Urban Meyer says ‘Big Ten has passed the SEC’ among high-end teams

Former Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer shared high praise for the Big Ten after its teams’ performances in recent seasons.

The 2014 national champion went as far to say the conference is now the best in college football, despite the SEC’s historic dominance in recent memory.

“Well, you know what the SEC’s done? It’s raised the level,” Meyer said on an appearance with the Another Dooley Noted Podcast. “But the Big Ten has passed the SEC at the upper part. If you would have told me that 10 years ago, I would’ve said it’s not even close. Because it’s not.”

The Big Ten has won back-to-back national championships, after Michigan won in 2024 and Ohio State followed suit in 2025. SEC teams didn’t make the national title game in either of the last two seasons, either.

Meyer, of course, won national championships at schools in both leagues, winning national championships in 2007 and 2009 at Florida, and in 2015 at Ohio State.

“When I first got to the Big Ten, even (Meyer’s wife, Shelley Meyer) said, ‘What in the world? This is a slow man’s game up here,’ and I like to think that the Buckeyes really changed that,” Meyer continued. “Then everyone else started investing in their schools. And started recruiting the best player, not just the footprint. As a result, the Wolverine team two years ago was one of the best teams I’ve seen.
