Where Swinney ranks in ESPN’s head coach rankings heading into 2025

Dabo Swinney continues to be recognized among college football’s elite, landing at No. 3 on ESPN’s list of the top 10 coaches entering the 2025 season.

Swinney received 87 points in the voting by ESPN reporters, finishing behind only Georgia’s Kirby Smart (119) and Ohio State’s Ryan Day (97). One voter, Kyle Bonagura, explained, “There’s not a clear line of delineation between No. 3 and No. 6, and there are logical arguments that could be used to advocate for Swinney as high as No. 1… his recent success hasn’t matched his peak success.”

Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman and Texas’ Steve Sarkisian rounded out the top five. Swinney was the only ACC coach in the top 10, though several others received votes, including North Carolina’s Bill Belichick (10), Louisville’s Jeff Brohm (6), and SMU’s Rhett Lashlee (3). LSU’s Brian Kelly, whose team opens the season at Clemson on August 30, received 13 points and narrowly missed the cut.

Now entering his 17th full season, Swinney is Clemson’s all-time winningest coach and holds the record for most wins in ACC history. He has led the Tigers to nine conference titles, seven College Football Playoff berths, and two national championships. Clemson has posted 10 or more wins in 13 of the last 14 seasons under his leadership.
