FOXBOROUGH — Drake Maye watched from the sidelines as TreVeyon Henderson charged down the field on the opening kickoff return, powering past every Commanders player. And before he knew it, he ran 100 yards, from one end zone to the other.
So, what was Maye’s reaction to Henderson’s first play in an NFL game?
“He’s like a lightning bolt. I saw the crease, knew he was gone,” Maye explained. “Pretty cool the first time he touches the football, it’s a touchdown.”
The quarterback also took a moment to acknowledge the work done by the other players on the field.
“Credit to the guys that did the blocking up front. That’s special teams and all three phases,” Maye added. “Special teams got a chance to be big for us this year.”
As for Henderson, when he recalled the play after the game, he detailed how he saw an opportunity and he took it.
“I wasn’t even expecting that, and then when I saw the crease, it was on from there,” he told reporters. “I thought the kicker was gonna get me, so I had to make sure I hit the gas. But yeah, that’s when I knew [I had a touchdown], when I got past the kicker.”
That’s just a teaser for what’s to come this season. With the trio of Henderson, Rhamondre Stevenson, and Antonio Gibson, it’s going to be “tough on the defense,” in the words of Maye.
“They all can make you miss. They can run over you,” he said. “They can catch balls out of the backfield. It’s going to be challenging for us on when to use ’em, how to use ’em, getting ’em the ball. Got to get those guys open in space. They’re great football players.
“Excited to have them beside me. I think the best thing about them, they’re smart,” he added. “They’re good running the football, that’s obvious. But routes. I think they’re willing to back. That’s something you look for in a quarterback, is he going up in the…
